What is LEAVE A LEGACY® ?

LEAVE A LEGACY® is a community-based program to help people learn about charitable giving through a will or from an estate. LEAVE A LEGACY® does NOT solicit gifts for any particular organization. Instead, the program is a cooperative effort of all types of nonprofit groups including social service and arts organizations, faith communities, hospitals, educational institutions and other philanthropic groups.

Charitable, nonprofit groups play an important role in our lives, extending help in many ways, from giving seniors a hot meal, to linking up children with good role models. Help may also come in the form of fighting a terrible disease, leading a spiritual experience or bringing beauty to your world through the arts.

The truth is that these special organizations need financial assistance from people like you in order to continue their good deeds. More than 70% of Americans contribute to the nonprofit groups of their choice throughout their lifetimes. Only around 6% continue this support through a gift in their will or estate plan. By making these "planned gifts", you can continue to help organizations that are making an important difference in your community. When you LEAVE A LEGACY®, you make sure that help continues to be there for those who need it.

With a little planning, today's generous donors can continue to make a difference beyond their own lifetime. They just need to know how.

Leave a Legacy® is a collaborative effort to explain the substantial financial advantages of giving a planned gift, including the tax benefits that may accompany a gift from your will or estate. Anyone wishing to serve on the Leave a Legacy Committee or desires more information is encouraged to email or call Eleanor Foster Swarat at info@scpgc.org or 803.777.3300.

What can you do now to Leave a Legacy®?

  • Prepare a will. Only half of us have now, and without a will you may lose control of your assets.
  • Leave a specific dollar amount or percentage of your assets.
  • Consider using assets such as stocks and bonds as a charitable gift. They may provide estate tax savings.
  • Name a beneficiary of your pension plan, IRA or life insurance policy.
  • Remember loved ones with memorial gifts.
  • Encourage family and friends to leave gifts in their will.
  • Ask your financial advisor for counsel and to include charitable giving as part of counsel to other clients as well.

Leave A Legacy was created by the Central Ohio Planned Giving Council. They have allowed National Committee on Planned Giving (NCPG) to distribute the program to all of its councils in the hopes of creating national impact.

The Leave A Legacy kit includes a video describing the program and a workbook for implementing it in the local community. Members of the SC Planned Giving Council may order Leave a Legacy kits for $20 and must sign as licensing agreement (CLICK HERE). Non-members may become Leave a Legacy partners for $50 and must also sign licensing agreement.

The licensing form may be sent with your check payable to the SC Planned Giving Council to Secretary-Treasurer Keith Rumrill, SC Planned Giving Council, PO Box 61286, North Charleston, SC 29419.
