Mission Possible: Getting in the Door and Getting What You Came For

From getting the visit to getting the gift, this step-by-step guide will outline tips and proven strategies to help you get what you want. These principles are pulled from the latest research in social psychology and human interdynamics, and road-tested in hundreds of actual visits. Incorporating break-out groups to help you develop your own strategies, this lab session will give you the language and the confidence so you too can "have them at hello."

Erich Hamm, CTFA
Is There a Gift in a Charitable Gift Annuity?

As non-profits work toward enhancing their arsenal of planned giving tools, many believe they need to offer charitable gift annuities to their donors. Others who have added charitable gift annuities to their offerings are learning that there is a lot that goes into administering the program. They struggle with the idea that there may not be much of a "gift" left after all is said and done. We will take a look at both sides during the presentation and discussion that follows.

Topics covered:

  • What a CGA is….and what it isn't
  • Who might be interested in a CGA
  • Types of CGAs and funding a CGA
  • How does a CGA work (beginning to end)
  • Factors to consider in CGAs and CGA programs
  • How one might start a CGA program

Patton McDowell, CFRE
Strengthening Your Team for Integrated Planned and Major Giving

Through this workshop, Patton McDowell will lead participants, regardless of their experience, to understand how to develop an entire team into an integrated planned and major giving organization. He will incorporate practical exercises and resources into each step of the team building process. He will demonstrate the importance of personal and team development, and how growing a nonprofit professional not only benefits the participant, but also strengthens their organization and the organization's mission. Finally, Patton will emphasize multiple horizons for professional and team building, helping to get the team better organized to develop a planned giving and major gift program.

Shake Up Your Planned Giving Marketing Today!

Are you searching for new ways to promote planned gifts? Looking for alternatives to newsletter articles called "Donors Make a Difference?" Did you just spend way too many hours writing ad copy, a website feature or "Donor Profile?" Then take a big step by taking a few small steps outside of your Planned Gift Box and think about marketing in a fresh, new way. This session will focus on how you can be more creative, save time and produce compelling marketing content. Think of your prospective donors as a non-captive audience. What can you show them that will catch – and keep – their attention? We'll discuss marketing trends, etc., but most of the session will be hands-on. Please bring newsletters, mailings, web content, donor stories, photographs, advertisements or any marketing materials and we'll work on as many as time will allow.

Successful Life Income Gifts of Real Estate

Real estate represents a significant portion of many donors' net worth. While gifts of real property can be complex, they are often larger than gifts of other assets and worthwhile for charities to accept and manage. This presentation will examine some statistics on real estate life income gifts received recently, and then share ideas on managing marketability and cash flow issues, as well as donors' expectations, in today's difficult economic environment.

Attendees will learn:

  1. to recognize real estate gift opportunities (and non-opportunities to avoid);
  2. to minimize marketability and cash flow risks for charities closing life-income gifts of real estate;
  3. to manage donor expectations throughout the real estate gift process.

Social Networking for Gifts
Session sponsored by Crescendo Interactive, Inc.

While most of us have tried Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn by now, there is no body of research on how charities are actually using social media to reach donors for planned gifts. This presentation covers best practices based on a review of over 100 charity social networking sites and 15 personal interviews with charities using social media to encourage current and planned gifts. Learn how to share gift concepts with your friends and fans on Facebook, blog your organization's story, update your followers on Twitter and prospect and build your electronic portfolio using LinkedIn.

Life Cycles of a Charity

The fund raising choices charities make today have huge consequences for the future. Planting the seeds of proactive strategic planning today will ultimately bear fruit for a better tomorrow. Just as humans evolve through stages of development and must choose to prepare for the future, charitable organizations must make strategic decisions today for tomorrow's benefit or suffer the consequences. This session will review the organizational phases that every charity encounters and the role that an integrated planned giving program has to the overall success and sustainability. Organizational commitment to cultivating a planned giving program can serve as the differentiating factor allowing charities to remain empowered and capable of achieving their missions indefinitely.

10:15 – 11:15

Nancy Mahler, JD
Gift Administration Problems

Interactive series of brief case studies describing practical problems experienced at gift funding or during the administration of life income gifts. Emphasis is placed on how these problems can be avoided or resolved in a manner that results in the best possible outcomes for the donor/beneficiary and the charity.

Larry Raff, MPH
Endowment Fundraising

The "E" word has taken on new meaning with the recent market volatility and the need by many nonprofit organizations for "now" money. This presentation will examine the strategic wisdom of raising funds for endowment, how to raise this special breed of restricted gifts, and from whom.

11:30 – 12:30

Closing Address: Tom Lawson & David Routh
How Can Professional Advisors and Development Staff Work Together to Increase Philanthropic Giving?

Both Development Officers and Professional Advisors want there to be more philanthropic giving in the world! If this is the case, where might there be efficiencies in working closer together? David Routh, US Trust, Private Client Advisor and Tom Lawson, US Trust, Senior Philanthropic Advisor have a unique perspective on this "opportunity." David and Tom have both worked for public charities and wealth management firms. Their view from both sides of the philanthropic planning table should provide interesting insights and suggestions for those present.
